New Beginnings from Yours Truly

There is something in the air and it feels like change, like something new, like new beginnings…

New beginnings that start with releasing old stuff and letting of of what does not serve a purpose anymore, as well as learning from the past to move into an empowered, courageous place of being fully present.

The other day I was watching a rather disturbing film.

“Forgetting is a gift”, the actor said.

Although it was fiction, someone thought it up…

No, forgetting is not a gift.

Memories resurface for a reason, and the attempt of suppressing memories can cause the body to develop pain and ultimately physical illness.

Pain shows us where to pay attention and when we pay attention we can figure out how to cope with the cause.

And there are many methods that are helpful just as there are methods that are perhaps less helpful.

We have choice.

We need to be willing for change to happen, for the process of redirecting the course of our lives for better or for something else more powerful than the current existence.

Change is here, and it is the only constant in life.

When we laugh and really laugh things get messy – it is a life-altering experience.

When you give yourself permission to fully experience laughter new threads start weaving into new beginnings of you.

We dig out stuff that must be dealt with, and it is not the same as to say you need to re-live everything you’ve gone through in life, no, things may resurface and release through the catharsis of laughter, sobbing or raging.

Well, in Laughter Yoga we mostly laugh cathartically but other emotional releases are welcome, too, as Laughter Yoga helps you be accepting of all of which you are.

Suppressing our emotions is never helpful so we embrace it all.

Laughing to rid the body of stored up traumatic cell memories avoids somatisation (where the body instead of handling the experience it starts developing physical sign, symptoms and eventually illness) is a superb method for developing good physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being.

Let’s deal with the pain and painful memories so we can move on with greater health and a wholesome mind.

Release does not correct a wrong or remove it from existence, it simply changes the way forward thus allowing the body to heal and recover.

So here is what I do.

Laughter Yoga is the most simple of answers.

And guess what – it is not always about laughing loudly, it is about being willing to explore your own self-expression leading to catharsis.

At times it is giving the self permission to sob or rage and remove ungrieved grief in the ways that serve best in the moment.

Change is neither good or bad.

Change simply is there for everyone whether we like the upheaval sometimes connected with change or prefer to stay put.

The world has already seen changes and many new beginnings in the new year of 2025 – are you ready for your own new beginnings?

To feel the totality and greatness in your own soul sets you free.

This is the effect of Laughter Yoga.

The importance of Laughter Yoga and training

My thoughts lead nicely into the action of choosing laughter on a daily basis.

According to Sophie Scott “Everybody laughs more than they think they do”. You can view the BBC podcast on https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002693p.

However, experience shows that the socialised laughter we share is often very short bursts of superficial laughter that does not often reach well enough into the important parts of our body, like for example our brain and our gut.

Laughter gives us a new lease on life.

In the presence of laughter there is no alternative than laugh along.

We see it again and again, viral videos where one person starts chuckling and soon a whole bus stop, train carriage, or people elsewhere join without even knowing why.

With Laughter Yoga we have a serious means to shaping our society with joy and connected communities, creating workplaces with engagement and thriving, bonds with other people without judgment and hurt.

If you never had the thought of learning Laughter Yoga, or if you ever had the thought of learning Laughter Yoga now is the best time for making the decision, remove any procrastinating reasons, and add urgency to your thought.

February signifies new beginnings, it is an auspicious time to choose to make a difference in your own life and potentially in other people’s lives, too.

Laughter creates change, change creates new perspective, new perspective creates new dreams, new dreams create new realities, and I could go on.

…of laughter, joy and connection.

Whilst the series on Mental Health and Laughter Yoga has become somewhat delayed every matter involving laughter also involves our mental health.

The laughter we share in workplaces and events is second to none, it is a true blessing and almost an artform.

Where people know each other from daily activities and interaction, there is a deeper connecting being created when we show up with our deep, hearty laughter.

The laughter kept on coming in January!

Reminding us all that it can also be a fragile state to be in if we let it go after just one experience.

With such a powerful tool that Laughter Yoga truly is there is a real urgency to embrace and incorporate it into every day, so the benefits can be reaped on an ongoing basis.

The knock-on effect on our physical, mental, emotional and social health makes me want to sing and dance in some form of praise but I am also conscious that I don’t want to infringe and ideas that Laughter Yoga is religious because it certainly is not.

Laughter Yoga is free from religion, politics, racism, homophobia, stigmatisation and supports all the 9 protected characteristics listed in the Equality Act 2010.

It really is for everyone regardless our abilities, background, presence, past and future.

There is a real nurturing kindness and care taking place when we laugh together, which removes the need to have reasons for the laughter, we simply laugh to build resilience, connection, understanding, kindness, motivation, and overall great health.

Reminding ourselves that there is no health without mental health, we all have it!

The MS Society West London Online Laughter Club is live every Friday until end of December 2025!

People living with MS and other conditions benefit hugely from a daily practice of Laughter Yoga as the stress that often can cause deterioration of health through the impact of relapses can be reduced and the effect potentially diminished.
